Forum Revival!

See what’s new on the forums! http://geekysweetie.com/forums

Our forums were a sad, lonely place with over 50,000 spam bots.

That’s no longer the case! In an effort to crush the evil spam bots, some user accounts may have also been slain. If this happened to you, please re-register on the forums and join us <3.

The biggest change is we’ve migrated from phpbb to mybb. As such some features and content were not carried over, you can check the forums in the Site Updates section to get more info.

I’m looking for a few moderators too! If you’re interested just drop me a private message on the forum. I have nothing to offer, but if you like anime and games and want to help build a new online community, it may be fun, right? 🙂

We’ve added some “bots” of our own too which are pulling news and content (excerpts) from leading authorities in anime, gaming, tech, toys, Japanese culture, Kdramas, Kpop, and more. These bots are going to help keep the site active, and provide relevant news content to help give the community a more lively feel. These bots are your friends! Feel free to reply to any threads they create.

One such bot that we’ve added will pull news from our blog/front page here too 🙂 So you can stay notified of new posts. Yay!

Hope to see you over on the forums ❤ much love!

New Theme – Test Run – Feedback Request

I wanna know what you guys think about this theme. Is it cute? Or is it too distracting? I’ve always been a fan of VERY minimalistic designs, but I thought since I run a “kawaii blog” maybe I should try out the “cutesy” look.

I dunno if you’ve ever visited my site before or not – so here are some screenshots of our most recent theme before the switch. As you can see it was all free roaming white spaces, without a background, or without being “boxed in”.

Which do you prefer? the old theme in the screen shots below? Or the new “cute” theme?

If the background image here was grey scale and/or transparent, would that make it less distracting for you?

🙂 Let me know your thoughts.

EDIT: I noticed that in Mobile (Iphone) that the background image does not display in portrait mode – and in landscape mode the background fills in as a header image. So if viewing on a mobile device you may not know exactly what I’m talking about 🙂

EDIT 2: I made it a lot more “muted” in color – and I like it a lot better now. I think I’m finally “happy” with it – but I’m still open to feedback. 🙂

Ability to Choose Theme – Postponed

We are adding the ability to allow you to choose different themes for viewing the blog via the main site http://www.GeekySweetie.com. In preparation for this we will be activating some themes (in order to place widgets or modify some lines of code). If things are not looking or working as you may expect, this could be the reason.

This post will be updated once the new features (and themes) are in place.

Right after deciding to do this, they released WordPress 4.5 literally seconds after this post went live – which makes some themes look funky. This may be a process spanning a few days. Thank you for your patience.

We’ve decided to postpone this feature indefinitely for a few different reasons:

1.) Maintaining multiple themes will put more stress on the servers, as well as take more manpower/time/energy to make sure themes are up to date and when new updates are made that they don’t break or conflict with anything else on the site.

2.) Plugin to allow anonymous users to choose a theme still has quite a few bugs – took it for a test drive tonight and noticed a few quirks which may just be a result of the wordpress update to 4.5 today /shrugs

3.) Realized how quickly the themes become obsolete – I deleted most of our themes today. From 60+ to under 20 themes which were still functioning as they should. – Once again could be due to the update today.

4.) Questioned how often users would use this feature – while it’s fun and offers a layer of personalization, would a new visitor to the site even understand how to switch themes or even care or would they just prefer less clutter and to just read the information they’re seeking and leave?

So for now this lil project is on hold.

I’ve switched back to our current “default” theme and reset all the widgets in place so everything should be functioning for you guys.

Hey if nothing else, this was a good spring cleaning to get rid of those older themes. so yay.

Check Out Our New Forums

We’ve “soft launched” a new forum system for our readers to interact with eachother.

There’s not too much there yet, but if you want bragging rights and to secure your username and a low ID number you can sign up now :)

We’ve also changed our theme (again) – I apologize that the theme we ran for the last few weeks had some poor navigation elements which caused parts of the menu to be truncated. This menu should be much cleaner. Enjoy the new look and new features. More new features will be coming in the next few weeks.

If you have any suggestions on how to improve either the site, or the forums, be sure to hit that big pink REPLY NOW button and leave a comment below.
