Orange Manga Review + Crunchyroll Begins Airing Orange Anime Based on the Manga by Ichigo Takano

I’m not as big of a reader as I used to be when I was younger, however, the last few seasons of anime have not held much to capture my interests, and being single again I find myself with too much spare time. So this past year I’ve been reading a lot of manga! One of my favorites, which is available to read for free on Crunchyroll, is “Orange” — and a few days ago Crunchyroll announced they will be simul-casting the new anime based on the manga as well! I thought that makes it a good time to share my love of this series. I’m so excited about the anime adaptation! This review is for the manga version 🙂

There may be some slight spoiler for the first volume – I have tried to avoid them and keep this as brief and condensed as possible but if you’re worried, I’d recommend reading or watching the series first before going any further.

Title: Orange
Author: Ichigo Takano
Genre: Shoujo / Slice of Life / Mystery / Time Travel / Scifi / Romance
Volumes: 5
Release Date: 2012
Where to Read (for Free): http://www.crunchyroll.com/comics/manga/orange/volumes
Where to Purchase (For Your Collection):

Geeky: geekygeekygeekygeeky 4/5 – due to the mystery of the time travel and suspense of life and death circumstances this series could easily be enjoyed by geeks regardless of their genders. However, the shoujo elements are strong, and there’s not much “action” aside from the time travel bits. So if you don’t enjoy slice of life, you likely won’t like this either.

Sweetie: sweetiesweetiesweetiesweetiesweetie 5/5 – A very sweet love story here with a lot of heart and emotion and great character growth continuously throughout the series.

Overall: 41/50 82% B- “Very Good Manga for Girls”

Concept: 10/10 The manga revolves around a young girl named Naho who one day receives a mysterious letter claiming to have been sent by her “future self”. It forewarns Naho that a new student is going to be transferring to their school and that this student will plan to commit suicide by the end of the school year and tries to give her advice on how to help save her “friend”. Naho works closely with her classmates, at first unable to tell them about the letter but gradually opening up to them as they enjoy their normal highschool life and Naho finds herself falling in love with the new student who she’s set out to save.

Story: 6/10 – I love the story (which I’ve outlined above without spoiling too much for you). However, the story ends with a rather “open” ending, and doesn’t resolve some of the questions I have. I can’t tell you more, obviously without spoiling it, but it was just not a very satisfactory ending to me. I also often wondered what became of the future Naho in the original “timeline” – because she was in love with and married to someone else and even had a child by him (this is all revealed pretty early (first chapter before she sends the letter to her “past self”) so it’s only a minor spoiler so don’t freak too much. — But if she saves Kakeru — would that then lead to Naho and Kakeru getting together, and how would that impact her child/relationship with the other person? — I wondered about that throughout the entire manga… I felt badly for this other person who really loves Naho. That slightly diminished my liking of Naho and Kakeru a little bit.

Characters: 8/10 Naho is the stereotypical heroine we always see in shoujo novels. She’s naive, afraid of her feelings, afraid of messing things up with her love interest, and pretty dense and oblivious to what seems obvious (about the relationship) to everyone else. She has a good group of friends who act as comic support, as well as love rivals, and this is all really common mundane stuff here. The most interesting character, by far, is Kakeru… he is one hot mess…. he blames himself for something that happens to his family at home (I won’t spoil it for you). He refuses to talk to anyone about his guilt/shame/feelings/fears and they eat away at him, which in the original time line leads to his committing suicide. Naho’s determination slowly begins to change Kakeru and get him to finally trust and open up to her and their other friends, however, it also frightens Kakeru, and we see him regress over and over and withdraw back into his depressing little shell. You don’t realize up until the very end if he will go through with suicide again or choose to live a happy life. I liked the suspense and drama. I liked even the dull mundane bits, and the comedy and humor along the way, and yes, even though I felt bad for some of the love rivals, I really did hope for Naho and Kakeru to get together. You can really feel their love and emotions for one another. You can also feel how awkward they are, and how they continue to inadvertently hurt eachother and struggle and fumble through their relationship.

Artwork: 8/10 – The art style is cute, and yet, distinctive. This is a relatively newer mangaka without many hits out there yet – I’m pretty sure this is their first novel to get picked up for an anime adaptation. I loved how each character looked very unique and different. Every single one is a different height and different body build. Naho is kinda short, and a little “pudgy” even with rounder cheeks, etc. This gives her a sweet soft innocent look that makes her a very likeable character for kawaii-ness alone. The boys of course are all absolute hotties :). My favorite thing is the multitude of different facial expressions – this artist has a very expressive style to their drawings.

Overall: 41/50 82% B- “Very Good Manga for Girls”

Animenewsnetwork.com provides the following information about the upcoming anime adaptation. I think most interesting to note, it’s being written by the same writer as Stein’s Gate, which is very fitting for a time travel anime. I do not see mention anywhere of the original mangaka’s hand touching the anime adaptation. Can we expect to see some changes in the story? I’m excited to find out.

The anime’s cast includes:

Hiroshi Hamasaki (Steins;Gate, Terraformars) is directing the anime atTMS Entertainment and Telecom Animation Film, and Yuuko Kakihara(Chihayafuru 2) is writing the scripts. Nobuteru Yuki (The Vision of Escaflowne, Kids on the Slope) is designing the characters. Yukio Nagasaki (GATE, Dragon Ball Z Kai) is serving as the sound director, and Hiroaki Tsutsumi (Kuromukuro, Monster Musume) is composing the music.

Boxychan Anime Box – June Unboxing Photos and Review – Monthly Subscription Box for Anime and Manga Fans

I just finished my review for Betoyo Bento here. In this review I mentioned how I just had a birthday a few weeks ago and my best friend gifted me with 2 subscription boxes. Here is the 2nd of those subscriptions – Boxychan Anime Box. I liked this box so well that I subscribed myself after opening this awesome box. I’m also going to update my top ten list of subscription boxes for geeky girls to reflect my love of Boxychan. What makes Boxychan so great in my opinion are two things – 1.) It has stuff you’ll actually use. I don’t know if “every” box is like this, but I’m assuming each box contains one manga and one dvd. – that’s actually stuff I want! stuff I’m already buying. Yes, little figures and posters and candy and other things are good – but this is stuff that’s expensive, manga is usually around $10-$15 a pop, Dvds around $15-20 a pop. Speaking of the word “Pop” that brings me to point 2.) This box is full of officially licensed products! Including the VERY popular “Funko Pops” YES! 🙂

When signing up for Boxychan you can choose many different “themes” – anime is just one of MANY geeky themes, they have comics, gamer, toys, geek, themes and more!! — I stuck with the anime theme, because I loved almost everything in this box!! I loved it so much I signed up for the longest subscription, the 9 month option. This is not a paid post or sponsored post. My friend bought me the one month box as a birthday gift, with her own money. I then used my own money to subscribe to the 9 month option – I just want to be very CLEAR that I GENUINELY love Boxychan. It is my favorite box. Oh by the way, interesting little tidbit for you – the 9 month option, only takes your first month’s payment of $28 up front – unlike MANY of these boxes where if you want the year subscription you’re paying hundreds of dollars – but I assume if you try to cancel before the 9 months are up they “clip you” for the remaining months then. But I like that they don’t want the whole fees up front – very kind! You also get discounts for longer subscriptions (I believe, but can’t remember for sure, that a single box is $35 a month), so it was a no brainer to me to sign up for the full deal.

The other things you do when signing up are indicate your gender, and your “age” (child, teen, or adult) – I think they may customize the box to fit this demographic info! I say this, because the manga I received was VERY girly (GOOD Just what I like!! SHOUJO!! It’s very hard to find Shoujo stuff in these monthly boxes because most of them just focus on “mainstream” shounen stuff.) It also had sailor moon! (another “girly” shoujo item). And Totoro – which appeals to both male and female, but probably more towards girls for the kawaii factor. It had Tokyo Ghoul too which I think is more popular with boys, but probably one of the most popular anime series in recent years.

Lastly, when you sign up, you are asked your shirt and shoe sizes. The June box did not have any wearable items, but it’s good to know they have from Extra Small up to 2XL.

You can learn more about Boxychan over here: http://www.boxychan.com/products/anime-mystery-box

They call themselves the “original” themed mystery box – I’m not sure if that’s accurate. I’d not heard of them before – but to me they’re “claiming” to be the first anime subscription box available on the net. Which if it’s true, gives them some “street kred” and reliability.

Anyways I know what all you lovely people want to see, the box opening photos! So let’s get to it!

The outside box is rather plain compared to some of the competitors, for example, Doki Doki, which I reviewed here, uses a flashy bright pink attractive box. While Pusheen Box uses a box that looks like a cat on all 4 sides, which I’ve reviewed here. However, Boxychan keeps it very simple, with just a smile on one side of the box, and their logo on another side. Similar almost to amazon’s familiar packaging. The paint was also rubbing off of the outside of the box. – Not a big deal, but seeing it didn’t leave me with high expectations for the opening lol.

However, once cut open, this little box is just crammed full all the way with awesomeness. Also pink wrapping paper – which again to me seems to indicate that they probably select the items based on your gender and age group. The beautiful wrapping paper and seeing how FULL the box was started to lift my spirits and I started feeling excited.

OMG SAILOR MOON!!!!!!! I was even more excited removing the wrapping paper to see the Sailor Moon Blind Box Figure. 🙂 So let’s start the review with that item. My only “complaint” is Damn that’s a big ass box for a tiny fingertip sized lil guy! LOL. The packaging of the figure was exciting though! Although it also sort of defeated the purpose of it being a “blind” box. The figure itself is painted well although it does have rough “edges” – I am used to this though since I collect “Asian balljointed dolls” which often have unfinished seams and I’m not bothered by this, but for some people who are unacustomed to seeing a figure or doll with rough seams showing, it may look cheap but this is actually quite common for toys from asian countries. Either way, tiny lil Artemis is so kawaii (bonus points for me since I love cats lol) and the base is engraved with the moon rod and beautiful scrollwork. Once again, this item says “For Girls” on it, which is another indicator that Boxychan may select items taking your gender and age group into account – I cannot prove this, but am impressed by how many “girly” items were in the June box which leads me to wonder if it is in fact shipping out different items tailored to your demographics which it requests upon signing up. – I would be interested to hear from any men out there if they also received the same items in their June Boxychan box in the comments below.

Next up, we have the Totoro lanyard from Studio Ghibli. It’s cute and bright blue. You’ll probably see it in several other photos in this review since I slipped it on to take pictures and then didn’t take it off until after the review.

The anime that I received is Kirameki Project – I have not seen it or heard of it before — and I haven’t watched it yet, because my cats broke my TV and my laptop has no dvd player… 🙁 orz. I’m saving up (and waiting hopefully for a sale) to replace my TV. I need to mount it on my wall because my cats are so naughty.

Anyways though, it looks cute? It also looks like it has huge amounts of fan service though which is a bit of a put off – There’s a pretty prominent “Panty Shot” on the back of the packaging.

It’s a “giant robo” or “mecha” anime however, one of the mecha looks like a “doll” (from wikipedia). Wikipedia also says it’s a quirky and cute show, although they are also quick to point out that it has a huge amount of fanservice – most of which comes from said doll-like robot. They also note that it has a lot of drama (which to me is a plus as that’s my preferred genre for anime).

The manga, “Nui!”, on the other hand, that I received is ADORABLE – I would recommend it to anyone who is a fan of Fruits Basket or well a fan of Shoujo in general. It’s about a girl who loves her stuffed animals so much that they become human. Sometimes they can’t always control when or where this transformation will happen, and of course, all of them are in love with their owner. I really loved this manga – and once again had never heard of it before. Which is a pretty impressive feat since I’m usually “in the know” when it comes to all things shoujo.

Note that despite the pics below, the manga is in black and white (as most manga are), it just had a few colored pages inside.

There was also this weird (but kinda cute in it’s own way) “Pin” you know the kind you place on a hat, purse, backpack, jacket, etc – Of a baindaid (a popular “fashion” item in “Decora Fashion” which is a fashion trend in Japan where you wear as many accessories as humanly possible. This lil baindaid has a face and greenish blush on it’s “cheeks”. There was also a rubber, black Tokyo Ghoul bracelet (not pictured).

And last, but certainly not least, the Funko Pop Tokyo Ghoul figure. It’s Funko Pop, and Tokyo Ghoul, two of the hottest, most popular things in geek culture. There’s 2 versions, a girl, and a guy (forgive me, I’ve actually not yet watched Tokyo Ghoul so not real familiar with the characters) in this series. I received the girl figure. It’s cute, and I love Funko Pops! – Secretly wish it would have been one of the sailor moon funko pops instead – but still happy with this lol.

Once again, I can’t tell you just how impressed I am with this box – for $28 (for the 9 month plan) every month, I will get manga, anime dvds, funko pops and officially licensed anime goods! This stuff would probably easily cost over $65 if buying everything separately.

Hands down, Boxychan gets my vote for best anime subscription box – WAY better than Doki Doki – and slightly better than Betoyo.

I still also really like Pusheen Box because it’s so damn kawaii — but Boxychan has more “universal appeal” — even if you don’t like anime, they have other themes too – seriously, go check them out :). http://www.boxychan.com

PS: I signed up and my box has already been sent – which means I MAY get another June Box – if that is the case I may end up giving away a few duplicate items in a future blog post(s) – stay tuned :).

Betoyo – Kawaii Anime Figurines and Collectibles – Monthly Subscription Box – Unboxing Photos and Review

My birthday was last month. I turned 35. Eek, scary to be getting so old LOL. My best friend got me two wonderful subscription boxes for my birthday. The first is Betoyo, a box focusing primarily on anime figurines. I’m a doll or figure collector and also love the excitement of opening blind box figurines. This box is perfect for anime fans looking to add to their figure collections.

The June Betoyo Bento had a lot of adorable things packed inside. The highlights of the box were the “Fate” figure on the motorcycle, a figure from Sword Art Online, and a beautiful wall scroll from the popular “Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress” anime.

I don’t think I actually took a pic of the box – oopsie. — But inside the box was a beautiful “gift bag” from Touken Ranbu. Us girls love our bishounen, Am I Right? 🙂

The bag has artwork on both sides, one showing the majority of the cast members, and the other side a nice closeup of Kogitsunemaru.

It’s a big bag too – and since it was a birthday gift to me it was kinda awesome that it was essentially “gift wrapped”. Nice packaging! and if you have other friends who love anime, you can keep this bag and use it to wrap other gifts for friends in the future. Very useful.

OK let’s see what’s inside this month’s Betoyo Bento! 🙂

Hmm… the large giftbag makes it look a little empty in there! Still exciting though, lol!

First Up, Touken Ranbu Blindbox Figure. I love blindbox figures, it’s always so much fun wondering which one you will see when you open the box.

This collection includes 6 different figures, 1 per box of course. I’m not sure of the rarity of the items inside.

Packaging is a little bit bent, but so adorable. Here are the other sides of the box:

Wait “Made in China”? Why not “Made in Japan”? — Most likely counterfeit goods. This does not really bother me to be honest, but I know many doll collectors that are adamantly against any counterfeit items. — also another figure you’ll see later further down in this post broke apart and I was told by another user via instagram the same thing happened to them and that they learned it was because the figure was counterfeit. — so if you do not like counterfeit items – this box is NOT for you — but if you just like cute things, and don’t really care about “resale value” “collector value” and are ok taking a gamble with “quality”, and have no moral objections, then it’s still a great box for the money – and the figures still look adorable in your collection!

Also I didn’t realize what this box was trying to tell me – I think the “face” is painted on both sides so you get two facial expressions per figure and you can also swap faces between the figures, giving you a lot of options for how to display your figure. – I didn’t realize that, so the photos you will see only show one side of my figure’s face.

Alright, let’s open this puppy.

I got the white haired one. 🙂

Quality wise it’s kinda a “meh” – not real excited about this item. It just doesn’t look that “nice” 🙁

Next up, the wallscroll from kabaneri – I really like this item. I’ve yet to watch the anime, but seeing this beautiful artwork makes me want to check it out. She is very kawaii! The wallscroll has beautiful bright vivid colors and cute artwork. Love the kawaii girl in the kimono!. This will look great in my doll room. Very pleased with this item. And yes, it is printed on fabric, not paper, which will help ensure durability and longevity of the item.

It is what I would call a “mini” wallscroll. Here it is next to me for comparison (sorry for bad lighting. The first pic was taken outdoors and more accurate to the beautiful colors of this item. This next pic is indoors in dim lighting in the evening.

Next up another blind box, this one is Sword Art Online – this item is epic fail in my opinion. Here’s some pics of the box, which are about the only pics I have of this item because… it didn’t fit together “well” so I applied a LITTLE bit of pressure, trying to put it together, and it CRUMBLED, in multiple pieces, just by pressing a LITTLE bit firm with two fingers. Quality Issues here. — I am TOLD by someone on instagram that the same thing happened to them and they found out that the item was counterfeit, but cannot confirm the accuracy of this information. — Once again, the majority of the items say Made in China, which is typically an indicator of counterfeit items – so I would not be surprised if that was the case.

This lil one would have been cute – had it fit together and not broke apart with the slightest bit of pressure. – Your Mileage may vary.

Sword Art Online - June Betoyo Anime Subscription Box
Sword Art Online – June Betoyo Anime Subscription Box

I’ve saved the best for last – this item in my opinion makes this entire box well worth the subscription cost. It’s larger than the other items as you can see – but that’s not all – it’s well made (even if it is counterfeit, this one is not bad at all.) It has substantial weight to it, it’s painted a heck of a lot better than the other 2 figures, and it stands up, goes together well, and just looks awesome. The little motorcycle is so cute! I love this figure. Very much!

It comes with two bodies, one for sitting on the motorcycle and one for standing – and it stands well on it’s own. The standing body also has a katana. The two bodies are easy to interchange and fit together perfectly. My favorite thing about the figure may be the way her “hair” looks like it’s blowing in the breeze, which looks awesome as she’s “riding” her tiny motorcycle.

Look at my awesome figure; you know you is jelly 🙂

But you don’t have to be jealous, because you too can have an awesome Betoyo subscription box – it’s just $28 a month and yes, there are some flaws or issues, but I personally feel that all of the items combined are worth at least equal to if not over the cost of the subscription – I would subscribe if I had the funds, but I decided instead to subscribe to the other box my friend got for me for Boxychan (you’ll see a review later today for that one) – and I am already a subscriber to another box, the Pusheen Box which I reviewed here.

Anyways, if you liked the items here, be sure to sign up at Betoyo Bento to get in on the next box! http://www.betoyo.com/

Sweetie: 3/5 It’s a “pretty” game, but there’s not much “cute” – there’s also not much customization as far as appearances go. The story although funny, is mostly just there to move you through the quests and progress through the game, and not there to give you a sense of who’s who, why your kingdoms are at war, or about the lore or setting in the game world.

Concept: 9/10 Stormfall is a smart, sarcastic, witty, funny browser game which offers a large variety of quests, areas to explore, massive scale combat, ability to customize which research you take on, an awesome musical score and beautiful lush graphics with voice acting by a smart-alec narrator. While it does little to innovate the strategy genre, it is still a fun game for anyone who loves these city building types of games, and the high production values will keep you entertained, while daily quests and lots of things to see, do, build, and explore will have you replaying this game often.

Gameplay: 10/10 Like most strategy games, there is a city building aspect which the game introduces early on. You build farms to feed your troops, iron mines to get materials to arm your troops, and earn taxes to help fund your troops. You build libraries to research magic, and other structures to help build new types of weapons, armor, and unlock new units to add to your armies.

There’s also a skill tree element called the “Art of War” where you can customize which talents you learn, learning them in different order will branch off to letting you learn different skills, such as fortification, bows, thieves, trading, smuggling, etc. This is where a lot of the initial strategy comes into play.

The tutorial really helps new players jump right into the game and learn the mechanics. The narrator keeps the game entertaining and gives it a fresh perspective. From research, to city building, to intrigue, alliances, and battles, this game offers many options to let you take charge of your kingdoms.

The user interface is clean and intuitive, and combat feels dynamic but yet not overly complex or frustrating. The game has a good sense of balance between building and researching and battling to progress your kingdom.

Story: 7/10 – This game cracks me up – it is so funny LOL. You’ll see the humor right away within the first few seconds of the tutorial. The humor is accented by great voice acting! I’ve never seen a strategy game take such a sarcastic approach. It’s very refreshing! It makes it stand out in a sea of similar mobile games. It makes it unique and memorable and keeps me playing for longer. Beyond the humor though it seems like not much is revealed about the world, characters, lore, history, or setting of the game.

Characters: 3/10 The only character that’s given much personality is the narrator. I kinda feel this is a missed opportunity, as your advisers could have been given much more personality, and dialog even if it was only written and not voiced. I also think the game is missing a gameplay element by not letting you “recruit” advisers or having some bonuses/enhancements for different advisers, or aging/dying/marrying/mentoring etc of advisers, like many other games in this genre offer.

Graphics: 10/10 – The game is brought to live with beautiful detailed 3D environments and rich fantasy artwork and animation.

Music: 10/10 – For a little mobile/browser game, this game has some seriously wonderful music. It reminds me a lot of the music from Lord of the Rings or the Hobbit. Very pretty and the same “fantasy” vibe. It’s very dramatic music. There’s a good variety too, from very intense drum solos, to calming harp-like music.

Voice Acting: 7/10 – I’m surprised there’s voice acting throughout much of the game, and it’s actually pretty good. I like the tone, humor (at times), and deliverance throughout. However, very few of the key characters in the game are voiced and voice is given primarily through a narrator.

Community: 10/10 – Whether it’s chatting in game, forming alliances, recruiting your friends, joining a league, trading at the market, or using the official forums this game has a great sense of community that offers a break from the routine tasks of managing your kingdom.

Replay Value: 10/10 The daily quests, and sheer amount of things to build, do, and learn about this game make it worth logging in daily to work on your kingdom.

Dealspotr Interests

Interests is a new feature just rolled out in June 2016 that makes it easier to stay up on coupons that are important to you. For example, if you have kids, you might want to select the Babies and Kids interest or if you’re a geek like me, you’ll want to select the Electronics interest. Choosing an interest, is similar to “liking” or “following” on other social media, this just means that you’ll see these types of deals appear in your feed (more info on that shortly).

As part of the new onboarding experience, Dealspotr requests you to start by selecting 3 interests to get started. It will be the first thing you see after signing up. The screen will look like this. Just click on any of the images to select the interests you would like to follow. Don’t worry you can always unfollow an interest, or follow new interests whenever you’d like to.

Dealspotr Interests
Dealspotr Interests

Once you select an interest it will turn green. Once you select three or more interests, you will be allowed to continue to the next step of the tutorial.

Dealspotr Choose Interests
Dealspotr Choose Interests

You’ll also always see a handful of interests, even those you do not follow, in the navigation across the site. This makes it easy to browse for different deals throughout the many interests and allows deeper customization.

Interests on Dealspotr.com
Interests on Dealspotr.com

Also when you add a deal (more on that shortly) you can select up to 3 interests to add to your deal. Others can also add interests to your deals – and curators, other users like you and me, who volunteer their time to help maintain the interests, can remove the interests from any deals they feel do not fit in their section. By the way, I’m the curator for the Electronics section, which among other things, includes things like anime and videogames, come check it out if you’re a regular reader of my blog because we’re always posting and sharing lots of gaming discounts which I know you’ll love. 🙂

Brands on Dealspotr

The next screen will ask you to follow 3 popular brands from the interests you just selected in the previous step. This should be getting easier for you now, as it’s very similar to the process in the first step. Your suggested brands will be different depending on the interests you chose in the last step. For me, I chose Electronics, Restaurants and Dining Out, and Travel. So I see brands such as Amtrack, Nintendo, Starbucks, Denny’s, and Gamestop.

Select Brands to Follow on Dealspotr
Select Brands to Follow on Dealspotr

Once again, don’t worry too much about this, because you can at any time find new brands to follow by selecting STORES from the navigation, and hitting “FOLLOW” or “UNFOLLOW” next to each store. You can search for stores by NAME or browse different categories to help find your favorite new stores and new coupons.

Follow Stores on Dealspotr

Once again, once you’ve selected at least 3 Brands to follow you will be able to continue the onboarding experience. They will again turn green to indicate you’re following each brand.

Your Personalized Deal Feed on Dealspotr

It will then take you to your Deal Feed. This is where the magic happens. It may take a few minutes to generate your deal feed the first time depending how many interests and brands you’ve chosen to follow, but generally it takes about 15-30 seconds the first time to generate the feed. So do not be alarmed if you see a screen such as this.

Dealspotr Generating Your Deal Feed
Dealspotr Generating Your Deal Feed

Once it’s loaded up and ready to go it will be full of awesome deals for you like this:

Your Personalized Deal Feed on Dealspotr.com
Your Personalized Deal Feed on Dealspotr.com

From now on, each time you login to Dealspotr, you’ll be taken to your Deal Feed. It will serve as your homebase throughout your stay and give you easy access to all of the features that Dealspotr has to offer.

Dealspotr’s new personalized deal feed let’s you keep track of deals that you may be interested in in a variety of ways including showcasing recent deals from people, brands, and interests you follow, which includes both deals which they have posted, as well as deals which they have spotted, with the ability to click to see even more deals from each user, or showing you deals from interests which you’ve chosen to follow.

You can sort deals by “hot” or “on fire” deals to see what deals other users have been taking advantage of, or you can select “Spot Deals” to find the most recent deals added to the site.

Your feed also allows you to track your own deals that you have posted, or keep up with deals from your favorite users across the site, or your favorite brands and recommend new brands based on your interests. The feed is the first thing you see when arriving at Dealspotr and will be the “homebase” for much of your interactions on the site.

That sounds great, but you may be feeling overwhelmed right now, so let’s break it down into smaller steps to help you get acquainted with your feed.

How to Add Deals on Dealspotr

The first and most common way to earn points is by posting new coupons, sales, or deals on Dealspotr. So let’s jump right in and add a new deal!

Throughout every page of Dealspotr, you’ll see the navigation bar across the top. To get started, please click the Add Deal button next to your avatar. It’s a white button with green text and a green outline, between the search bar and your profile pic. See below.

Dealspotr Dashboard
Dealspotr Dashboard

The first step in adding a new deal is to decide if it is a deal affecting one product (or group of specific products), or a more general deal affecting multiple products and or multiple groups of products. See below.

Dealspotr Product Deal or Sitewide Sale?
Dealspotr Product Deal or Sitewide Sale?

Let’s take a look at what is needed to post a PRODUCT DEAL first:

Step 1 asks you to enter some key details about the product that this deal applies to.

Add a Product Deal to Dealspotr.com
Add a Product Deal to Dealspotr.com

First, select which store is offering this deal. If you don’t see a store listed, you can add the store yourself (more on that later).

Next, decide if this applies to a single product, or multiple products. An example might be a deal which applies to a 16GB Iphone on Verizon or in a certain color, or some other specific, would be a “Single Product” while a deal that applied to ALL Iphones, regardless of color, carrier, or hard drive size, would cover multiple products.

You can also enter who manufactures the product. For example, continuing with our Iphone theme, you could type Apple as the manufacturer, even though it’s not a coupon from the Apple Store, maybe it’s a coupon from hhgreg, or bestbuy, but Apple is still the product manufacturer. This field is optional so if you don’t happen to know the manufacturer, you can just skip it.

Product name and description becomes the Title for your deal and it is where you tell everyone A.) What the product is B.) What the deal is and any other key info. It should be brief and to the point. They also would like you to use “Title Case” when entering this field. That is, every word should begin with a Capital letter. Except optionally for words such as “the” “and” “or” “of” etc. Continuing again with our Iphone theme, the title of this deal could be “50% Off Iphone 6S 16GB Space Grey Models Today Only”

You do not need to include the store name in the title. Dealspotr is automatically going to append that to each deal. So in our example, the title that you and everyone sees on the site would say “50% Off Iphone 6S 16GB Space Grey Models Today Only at Best Buy”

The title is probably one of the most important sections because it becomes the first thing users see and helps them determine what your deal is and if they would like to “Spot” it (more on that soon). Spotting is good, because it can help your deal go hot or on fire (more on that soon too) which means more points for you. So you want to have the best titles possible.

However, having a title such as @@@HOT!!!!!! LOOK!!! NEW!!! 50% OFF NEW!!! IPHONES!!@@@ will get your deal flagged as spam and removed from the site. So don’t be annoying about it, just use your head and list all the facts and keep it brief. That’s the key to writing a great title.

So after the product name and description, the next thing you need is a link to the product page. Pretty self explanatory. You can copy the address from your browser window and paste it into this field.

The box below the Product Link field allows you to indicate if a product is refurbished. And below that you see a couple of other boxes you can check if your deal offers Free Shipping, is a BOGO (Buy one Get one (free or half off, etc)), or includes a Freebie with purchase, or access to a free trial.

Next you can enter the start and end dates. Some deals never expire and there’s a box for that too that you can check.

Hitting Continue will bring us to a screen asking for pricing information for your Deal. See a screenshot below.

How good is your Dealspotr Product Deal?
How good is your Dealspotr Product Deal?

The first field is where you put the “Sale Price” or how much the item will cost after your coupon is applied.

The next field lets you either search google, or enter a retailer’s list price, amazon list price, or list price from any other link you wish to compare it to.

After you fill in the pricing info, you can hit continue.

Step 3 asks if there’s anything else needed, here you can enter a promocode, printable coupon, or any special instructions. Some deals may require multiple steps such as a sale price via a promocode, plus a mail in rebate, or a coupon via an app, etc, so you can keep adding steps until you have given the reader everything they need to understand how you arrived at the sales price. Some deals may not need anything at all here, it may just be a special sale, and clicking the link takes you to the sales price automatically. By default this box is not checked, and you can skip on through to the next section, but if your deal does require some clarification it’s important to spend a few minutes to fill in the details here or else your deal may be flagged as inactive or not working correctly if users can’t figure out how to apply the discount. This will cause you to lose points, so even though it takes a little effort, it’s important that you’re correctly filling in all the necessary steps to follow to apply your discount.

The final screen let’s you preview and modify the text of your deal. In here, I like to copy and paste the terms and conditions directly from the product page when available, or give any other info I can to help clarify the deal. Sometimes there’s no other helpful information to be found about the deal, so hitting continue will let you publish your deal without making changes here and your deal will be live on Dealspotr, and you’ll instantly receive your points.

Review and Publish Deals on Dealspotr

This final screen also lets you (and sometimes even requires you) to add product images to your deal. It’s pretty self explanatory, save the product images to your computer, then click the grey “buttons” to browse and attach your photos, you’ll see a blue progress bar as the photos are being uploaded, once all photos have finished, you can select Finish and Post in the lower right hand corner to make your deal go live and receive your points.

Next we will take a look at how to add a SITEWIDE or SALE deal.

Dealspotr Product Deal or Sitewide Sale?
Dealspotr Product Deal or Sitewide Sale?

The first screen once again asks us to enter all of the important details about the sale.

Describe Your Deal on Dealspotr
Describe Your Deal on Dealspotr

If you’ve been following a long a lot of this will look familiar to the same information requested when posting a Product Deal.

First let everyone know which store is offering the deal.

Next is this a single step or multi-step deal.

Just to recap:  Some deals may require multiple steps such as a sale price via a promocode, plus a mail in rebate, or a coupon via an app, etc, so you can keep adding steps until you have given the reader everything they need to understand how you arrived at the sales price.

Next, let us know if it needs a Promocode, printable coupon, or any other items, or if it’s just simply a link to a page where the sale is taking place.

You are then asked to DESCRIBE THE DISCOUNT. This becomes the title for the Deal.

Just to Recap again: It should be brief and to the point.

This first page also presents a few check boxes and switches which help you better define your deal. These options including letting others know if your deal has Free Shipping, is a BOGO (Buy 1 Get 1 (half off, or free, etc)), In-Store Only (not good online), Free Trial, Freebie, or site-wide deal. Site wide deals are rare, but this is where you will make the MOST points – DO NOT ABUSE THIS by selecting this – if you mark a deal as site-wide and it is not site-wide you will be penalized and points taken away from you! Site-wide means the coupon or sale applies to every single thing in the store. The opposite of that, is a deal which has exclusions (that is, certain items or sections which it does not apply to), which you can also indicate in the section below.

Storewide or Sale Details on Dealspotr
Storewide or Sale Details on Dealspotr

Once you have all the important info entered here, you can move on to the next step by hitting Continue.

Which takes you to a final page to review and finish publishing your deal and uploading any images. This is super similar to the final page in adding a product deal so please refer to the recap below (screenshots are from the final step of the product deal but very similar to the final step of a storewide sale deal).

Spotting Deals on Dealspotr.

Adding new deals is not the only way to earn points on Dealspotr. You also get points if you are (one of) the first to spot a deal which becomes Hot or On Fire. I’m going to show you how to spot new deals now.

The top left hand block of the Deal Feed navigation shows you the key filters you’ll use to switch which deals are appearing on the right hand side of the screen.

Earn Points For Spotting Deals on Dealspotr
Earn Points For Spotting Deals on Dealspotr

Selecting “Spot Deals” will take you to the most recently added deals. Remember the sooner you spot the deal the bigger share of points you’ll rake in if/when it goes Hot or On Fire (which is determined by how many people over a period of time are also spotting the deal). If you’re the first to spot the deal you’ll earn as much as 200 points when it goes on fire – which is the same you’d get as if posting your own “sitewide” deal – so it is very lucrative to spot other people’s deals.

How do you spot a deal? You look for a symbol that looks like a grey circle with a chevron symbol which looks like ^ – this is what you’re looking for. – If you find a deal that you think will become hot, hit the ^ symbol to “Spot the deal”

It will start out as a grey symbol and turn green once you click it: See below:

Spot Deals on Dealspotr
Spot Deals on Dealspotr

Be careful though because you only have a limited number of spots available each day – However, as you continue to use the website every day this number will slowly increase. New users start with 5 spots available, but by correctly predicting which deals go hot and/or logging in every day you will earn more spots. It’s a slow process though. After 2-3 months with the site, I’ve only earned about 25 spots to give out each day. Better than 5, but still you need to put thought and strategy into which deals you spot to maximize your points. You can check your remaining spots across the top navigation. look for the same green circled chevron ^ symbol and then X (your remaining spots number) Today.  The 3rd icon from the right hand side in this screenshot below. As you can see, mine is indicating I have 29 spots left after spotting the deal in the screenshot above.

Commenting on Deals on Dealspotr

You also earn a small amount of points for commenting on deals across the site. To leave a comment hit the icon that looks like a chat bubble beneath a deal, and then type your comment into the box where it says “Add Your Reply” and hit “post”.

You will earn more points when commenting if you leave a relevant and detailed reply – both from the algorithm in the system assigning the points, but also from other users who can upvote your comments giving you more points as well.

Try not to spam the comments section with cut and paste responses or gibberish as this is likely to be flagged and removed and cost you points.

Share a Deal on Dealspotr

The symbol that looks like 3 circles connected by straight lines or like a “lesser than” sign or < shape under the deals allows you to share your deals across popular social media channels such as tumblr, twitter, facebook, or email, etc. – This helps deals get hot faster and means more points if you’re the poster or spotter of the deal. It’s also just a nice feeling to help others save money with the great deals around the site.

Flag a Deal on Dealspotr

You can also get points if you Flag a deal which does not work. Hit the word “Flag” beneath a non-working deal (visible in the image above). It will then prompt you for some details about what you tried and why it didn’t work. Providing as much detail in your report as possible will help you get the deal taken down quicker. You do not receive your points until it is verified that the deal is not working at which point you earn a modest amount of points for helping clean up the bad deals.

Following Users on Dealspotr

You can follow other users to stay up to date on deals they’re posting. This is great if you know someone is always posting hot deals. Not only does it let you take advantage of coupons as soon as possible, but it lets you be among the first to spot their deals in your personalized deal feed and earn more points for spotting it as quickly as possible. You can see who posted a deal and how long ago it was posted beneath each deal.

Hovering your mouse pointer over top of or clicking on the username will take you to a page to see all deals by that user and follow them for future deals as well. You can also easily search for and browse users using the “Community” navigation across the top and left of the site.

Adding Interests to a Deal on Dealspotr

Take a look at this screenshot again. Look at the link in “blue” (which is blue from my hovering over it while taking the screen shot – Normally, it’s grey. I just wanted to show you where to look). This “edit” button will allow you to add a deal to multiple interests.

Dealspotr info
Dealspotr info

Hitting edit will present a box asking you to begin typing interests to add to the deal. In this example, the user correctly already submitted their deal to Electronics & Tech, but there are a few other interests which may be helpful to file this deal under. It says it is a 13 inch Laptop, so I began typing Laptop and was presented with a dropdown list of interests which might fit my keyword. I am going to select “Laptop Computers” and hit save. This will add the above deal to the Laptop Computer interest. You can add multiple interests before hitting save or come back and add more interests later.

Add interests to Dealspotr Deals
Add interests to Dealspotr Deals

Just to recap, interests help you (and other users) search for and find deals relevant to their interests. You can find new interests to follow, or browse interests without following the first, by using the navigation across the top or left of the site or your live deal feed.

Updating Your Account Settings on Dealspotr

Now that you know the main ways to earn points on the site, let’s take a look at some other areas of the site. The community on Dealspotr is really active and a great place to discuss deals or make new friends, you can browse forums, send messages to other users, or even read blog posts.

If you’re thinking of interacting with the community, you’re probably going to want to fill in your profile details a little and add a profile pic.

To do so, click the grey square with a dark grey head shadow next to the Add deal button. From the next drop down, select SETTINGS.

Then the first option on the next screen says “Change Image” and clicking that blue button will allow you to upload a profile pic.

Scrolling down to the bottom of this page, you’ll see a field for text entry called Short Bio. You can tell the community a little bit about yourself here.

It’s also from this page where you can choose to change or update your name (say if you get married) or update or change your email address. It’s very important to keep your email address up to date as it will send your amazon giftcards to the email they have on file here.

Redeeming Your Points for Amazon Giftcards on Dealspotr

Every 10,000 points = a new amazon giftcard for you. Here’s how to redeem your points for giftcards.

Click your profile picture in the top site navigation and choose “Points and Rewards” from the drop down menu. This lets you view all of your points and rewards, as well as “Cash out” when you reach 10,000 points. To cash out, there is a button to the right that says “Claim Now” – It will be greyed out if you do not have enough points OR if you have a request for a gift card “Processing” — Unfortunately it does take 3 to 5 business days for you to get your giftcard after requesting one. I wish it was instant, but they need to verify that you’re posting legitimate deals and not gunking the site up with spam and inactive deals. – Sometimes I’ve received my giftcard the same or next day. All gift cards come to you via your email as I mentioned above which is why you need to keep your account details up to date. It seems like they’ve gotten slower processing the rewards the last month or so with lots of site updates, changes, and a large push for new members to join the site. But they do pay. you can see some proofs of my payments in the screenshots below – I’m typically cashing out about once every 4 to 5 days as long as I’m active on the site. I’ve not found a better way to earn free amazon giftcards online at any other site. I truly love Dealspotr and I think you will love it too!

Become an Influencer on Dealspotr and earn DOUBLE POINTS on EVERYTHING YOU DO. FOR LIFE.

Are You a Blogger, like me? It doesn’t matter what your blog is about (within reason) because Dealspotr has deals across so many different interests. You can apply to be an Influencer and earn 100% more points on everything sitewide for life. I got approved quickly and easily within 2-3 days of submitting my application but that was a few months ago, I’m not sure what their response time is like now, but here’s how you can apply to join the Influencer program.

From Community (across the top navigation) Choose INFLUENCERS in the drop down menu. You’ll see a page such as this:

Become a Dealspotr Influencer
Become a Dealspotr Influencer

Click “Learn More” to be taken to a page where you can read about the rules and criteria for becoming an Influencer. You can also apply in the next steps.

Apply Now to Become an Influencer on Dealspotr
Apply Now to Become an Influencer on Dealspotr

When you choose to Apply by hitting that green button, you’ll be asked to enter your blog URL, Dealspotr username, and two primary social media channels. They will analyze your site metrics, your writing style, content of your blog, and engagement on social media. I’m not sure how strict they are, I’m only hovering around 1500-2000 page views per month, and around 1400 twitter followers (my most active social media outlet). So I don’t think it’s that hard to get approved. It’s worth a shot anyways 🙂 It’s a great program!

Not only do you get DOUBLE points for life, you also get special emails from your coordinator. I’m not sure if they have multiple people helping here or if it’s one person, my coordinator’s name is Mike, and he is great. He will email occasionally about new features on the site, looking for beta testers, and as an Influencer you get the opportunity to provide feedback and shape the future of the Dealspotr website. He’ll also email special assignments for bloggers to earn points, products, or cash rewards. This tutorial is an example of one such paid assignment that I was selected to participate in. (but all opinions in this tutorial are 100% my own.).

You will likely want to add your coordinator to your safe sender list and be on the look out for new emails as they are usually important and help you earn extra perks faster!

Of course being an influencer also helps you get traffic back to your website and social media channels so it’s a win/win.

Dealspotr Reputation

Dealspotr Rep is what determines how many points you earn for all of your activities on Dealspotr. You start sadly with zero Rep. Rep has to be earned. You get +100% Rep if you join and are accepted into the Influencer program outlined above. This is yours forever throughout the life of your account and translates to double points.

But let’s say you’re not a blogger or not influential enough to get approved just yet. You still earn Rep across the site, however it will go up and down like a rollercoaster or stock market on a day to day week by week basis.

It is influenced by a few factors:

Being active and logging in each day.

Interacting with the community (commenting on deals, etc)

Correctly spotting “hot” deals.

Adding new working valid deals to the site each day – especially if those deals become “hot”.

Flagging inactive deals for removal.

Following users, brands, or interests, and gaining new followers.

But if at any time you become less active, your rep will start to drop. So it’s something you must work hard at and it is very slow and tedious to build up this bonus. After 3-4 months with the site, I’m at a 36% rep bonus NOT counting the extra 100% from being a verified Influencer. I also don’t get a bonus to my rep for being a curator and I think I should because THAT is a lot of work LOL. Maybe they will implement new ways to earn rep in the future, but for right now, all you can really do is continue to use the site in all of the ways outlined in this tutorial and stay active and hope for the best :).

You can view your Rep in the top navigation it looks like a Green lightning bolt or stock market tick symbol. It is the next to last symbol (when reading from left to right). Next to the gold star. The gold star by the way is your points for today. As you can see at time of this screenshot I had +30% Rep PLUS the +100% Rep from the Influencer program.

How to Add a Store to Dealspotr

The rest of this tutorial is just some odds and ends that didn’t really fit neatly into any of the above sections. Let’s start with “How to Add a Store to Dealspotr.” This will be necessary if you find a coupon or sale for a store not already on the site, and it’s easy to add a new store in a few short steps.

When adding a deal, you’ll be first asked what store the deal applies to. Begin typing the name of the store. If your store does not appear check different spellings, abbreviations, common misspellings etc. If it still doesn’t appear, it’s time to add your store. From the drop down menu select “Don’t See It? Suggest a New Store” with a Pencil Icon next to it as shown below.

Add a Store on Dealspotr
Add a Store on Dealspotr

Selecting that last item in the dropdown will prompt you for the Store Name, Store URL, and an optional Store Logo. Adding all of those will allow you to add the store and then add the deal to the new store.

How to Rate a Store on Dealspotr

You can rate and review a store on dealspotr by clicking the stars on the right hand side while viewing the profile for a store. This helps other users shop with confidence incase they’ve never done business with a particular brand before.

Rate Stores on Dealspotr

Refer users to Dealspotr

Refer New Users to Dealspotr and you will both earn points. Your unique referral link can be found by clicking your avatar picture in the top navigation. From the drop down menu select MY REFERRALS. In the right hand side you’ll see all of your current referred users and how many points they’ve earned you so far. Over on the left you’ll find your Referral link. Across the top you’ll also have access to buttons and banners you can use to help increase the referral click through rate.

When a user clicks on your referral link they’ll see a message similar to what you saw at the begining of this tutorial, where they are told to “Join and Claim their Bonus”. They will then have to set up their account and verify their email in order for you to receive your points. At time of this writing, Dealspotr was offering a 2,000 point referral bonus for you, and a 5,000 point bonus for the person you referred. You will then also make 10% of their points throughout the lifetime of your referral. This of course does not negatively impact their points in any way.

 How to Contact Dealspotr Support

Sometimes you might need to contact Dealspotr support. To do so you simply scroll all the way to the bottom of the page where you can see their physical and email address which is contact@dealspotr.com If you’re an influencer, you might also sometimes ask questions of your influencer contact. I’ve contacted both the regular support and the person working with me on the influencer program. You may not have a problem, but they are also super responsive and interested in feedback about the site, so it’s good to know how to contact them should you want to.

Tips and Tricks

How do you find new deals? The way I like to find my deals is simply by browsing my inbox a few times a day. I dunno about you, but I get a ton of spam email – sometimes it’s spam I’ve volunteered for, such as from stores I frequently shop at. But regardless, one thing is for sure, your inbox is a treasure trove of new coupons and deals, and you don’t even have to look that hard, or go out of your way to find them!

Try to get in the influencer program if you can and as soon as you possibly can, double points means for example, you’ve earned 10 Amazon Giftcards (which is $100 by the way!!!) in the time it takes most people to earn 5 Amazon Giftcards ($50 is still nothing to sneeze at!). The longer you wait, the more you’re missing out on this SWEET BONUS.

Try to spot deals at “off-peak” times. Try browsing the site as soon as you wake up, especially if like me, you’re on the east coast. While all those California “dreamers” are snoozing away, you have prime pickings to be the first to spot new deals which have been posted. Similarly, try to browse and spot deals when others may be in school or at work, or late at night when most folks are in bed.

Save your spots and use them sparingly! Don’t spot deals that are already hot or on fire, try looking for new deals which haven’t been spotted yet. Remember they won’t refresh again until the next day.

By the same token, don’t just waste your spots, if you absolutely have no time at all, burn through them all in a few quick seconds, taking a gamble picking a few deals, even if that’s the ONLY thing you do on the site this day. Unused spots = a huge missed opportunity, not only for points, but for more spots, and increased rep! Spot deals every day!

Complete your “checklist” each day – this is 200 easy points. It’s like a gamification element to Dealspotr, it gives you 3 easy tasks each day, such as follow 3 new people, rate new stores, or upload a printable coupon. The tasks change each day, but following them gives you a few hundred free points. It is a quick hit, and It only takes a few minutes.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this tutorial.

Romantic Diary Anime Otome Dressup Game Dating Sim with Cooking and Crafting

I just discovered, Romantic Diary, an anime Otome Dating Sim which is part Dressup Game, part Visual Novel, part Cooking Game, and has an extensive crafting system. At the core, this game looks quite similar to Hello Nikki! Which I reviewed here. However, it seems to have more robust features, and a heavier emphasis on story telling and dating elements. It’s also a “Stat-Raising” game similar to Princess Maker (which I reviewed here) or Tokimeki Memorial Girl’s Side (which I reviewed here).

Are you thinking about playing this game? If so please use my friend code (input it later after the tutorial at the “friend” screen). We’ll both get free stuff! ❤ Use Invite Code: 82477180

Title: Romantic Diary

Price: Free

Platforms: IOS and Android

Where To Get Romantic Diary:

Google Play Store: https://play.google.com/…

Apple App Store: https://itunes.apple.com…

Genre: Otome Visual Novel Dating Sim (With Stat-Raising Sim elements)

Publisher: NGames Interactive

Geeky:  3/5 – Technically speaking, this game is more advanced than about 95% of other Otome Dating Sims. It uses Live 2D to make the characters fully animated on dates, like Ensemble Stars or NekoPara. It also has much more to offer than just “dating” or “just dressup”.

Sweetie:  5/5 – One of the cutest games you’ll ever play.

Overall: 78 / 90 87% B+ “Very Good Game For Girls”

Concept: 10/10 This is fast becoming one of my favorite mobile games because of the wide variety of things to do from dressing up yourself, or one of several boys. It has full voice acting, and uses Live 2D to bring the characters “to life” – It has sky high production values. But not only that, but it’s a ton of fun. You can cook sweets to give to the boys to boost their affection, or plan a date by selecting different locations. You can work part time to earn in game currency, or study different subjects to boost your stats which helps unlock new event scenes, jobs, or even new guys to meet. There’s TONS of in game events too, which makes you want to keep playing, and an interesting story too.

Gameplay: 10/10 This game is unlike any of the other “dressup” games out there – it’s also equally different than some of the voltage/ntt solomare/kyonplete etc visual novels which have “dressup” components to them. This is more like a brand new genre of gaming that balances both dressup challenge type gameplay, with otome multiple ending/branching plot gameplay, as well as throwing in “Stat-Raising” gameplay ala Princess Maker or Tokimeki Memorial. It really captures several of my favorite genres here.

The basics of gameplay begin in “Story Mode” – here each “level” will present a new dressup challenge. You’re given hints at each level as to what to wear to pass to the next stage. For example you might be asked to wear “Pretty and Pure” clothes or “Mature and Sexy” or “Casual Streetwear” or “vintage” just to name a few. The different items you can get in the game all have these different traits (Once again like Tokimeki Memorial Girl’s Side), and when combined, you can create different looks. At the end you’re scored on how well you met the requirements. As you progress, you learn more about the strange fantasy world and explore deeper the character backgrounds and story.

But Gameplay doesn’t stop in story mode, it’s only beginning. From the main menu you have many different options, from cooking sweets, to tailoring or upgrading your own clothes, to dating, to playing various daily minigames to earn free items.

Story Mode helps you unlock new recipes for cooking or tailoring your clothes. (PS: the cooking and tailoring modes don’t open until later in story mode). Story mode is also how you meet new guys to date. As you play you keep unlocking new ways to play the game, making it an exciting and fresh experience on multiple playthroughs.

It even has a Skinship feature on the dates. If you don’t know what Skinship is, you might’ve heard about the recent controversy and removal of Skinship from Fire Emblem Fates which I covered in a news article here. But if you haven’t heard, Skinship is a concept common in many Japanese dating games, in which as your affection grows between you and the characters, you can “try your luck” at “petting” them in different parts of their body, stomach, arms, hair, face, lips, ear, etc. But if you are too bold or too forward, the affection will decrease, but if you are “petting” appropriately, it helps you bond with the character and thus, your affection will increase.

There is really a lot of things to do! You could play this game for hours a day, or devote as little as 20 minutes a day to collect your login bonus and free items for the day. It’s up to you.

Story: 7/10 – I think the story is cute, and SURPRISINGLY the translation is NOT terrible – I say surprisingly because if you look at their googleplay or itunes app store page…. their English is VERY poor. They must have outsourced the game’s translation or hired an editor though because there is little beyond minor typos which you see in almost all games with heavy text.

The story itself is about a girl (you) who is summoned into another world. When she first arrives, she can’t speak the language or understand what is happening. A young man casts a spell on her so that she may understand the native language of the world, and another young man begins helping her collect emblems as she begins life in the new world a “transfer student” in a magical school.

You learn that by helping others with their problems or concerns, you can extract magic shards from them which are causing their anxiety (and also which are valuable in this new world.) The events in the story focus on helping others and learning about why you’ve been summoned to the strange magic world.

Characters: 7/10 The characters are cute, both how they are drawn, as well as their personalities. There’s also ample character depth and progression as you increase affection with the different guys and turn that Tsundere or Shy boy into hopeless romantics for you lol. The characters also have unique fantasy elements to them, such as the main “cannon” character being an “elf” which is similar to a “druid” in that he can shapeshift – and sometimes not always “at will” similar to anime such as Fruits Basket or Ranma 1/2.

Graphics: 10/10 — I love this game’s graphics. Dozens of dressup options, high customization, you can make your own makeup, and combine different pieces of clothing, from dresses, to stockings, shoes, hair styles, hats, purses, jewelry, and more. Things have a soft, sweet, “dreamlike” vibe, and lots of pinks are used making it super cute and girly. Plus, as I mentioned, when you enter the dates, the game uses Live 2D which is a relatively new technology that can create fully animated models which appear 2D or anime like. — This sets it apart from other games which just use still images, which still, unfortunately, is the norm for almost all games of this type.

Music: 7/10: There’s a lot of cute and catchy tunes in this app, but a lot of them do get reused pretty often.

Voice Acting: 9/10 The game has the original voice acting in tact. I could be wrong, but I think it’s Chinese voice acting? It’s definitely not Japanese. It may be Korean, I dunno — That said, regardless of what it is, it’s highly expressive and further helps bring the characters to life. I deducted a point (maybe somewhat unfairly) because I didn’t like a few of the voices, but I’m not overly used to hearing Chinese (or whatever language this is). I just felt some of the voices were a little “jarring” on my nerves. Might just take some getting used to though. At least they kept the voice acting in so yay. Similar games such as Hello Nikki were originally fully voiced, and the voices removed for US release, so I really appreciate that this game kept the voices in tact.

Replay Value: 10/10 – I’ve said throughout this review, but the multitude of different things to do, from cooking, crafting, dating, minigames, dressup, questing, and in game limited time events, and of course exploring the story, keeps you wanting to play each day. This game is a huge time sink, but an enjoyable one!

Doki Doki June Box Opening Subscription Crate Review

As you can see from my instagram posts – I got my DokiDoki Crate today. My final verdict is do not subscribe to this crate — It has cute stuff, but the stuff inside was worth MAYBE 10 bucks, and that’s REALLY fricken stretching it lol. — I’d say its worth about 5 bucks. I paid $15 with a coupon. Regularly they charge $30 — which is almost criminal if you ask me. It was FULL of TINY teeny tiny JUNK. I subscribe ALSO to Pusheen Crate which is the same price and full of SUPER high quality, wonderful, LARGE items. — This is like literally full of 25 cent trinkets, no lie.— Some of them are adorable of course — but I feel they are charging too much. This box should be about 10 a month, tops. maybe 15 to count for shipping and handling, max.

It does have some exclusives (the yellow plush) and some nice and cute things (the snoopy blindbox figure is brand new in Japan and hard to find or so I’m told. – and since it’s “Series One” it’ll probably go up in price). I even really like some of the lil “trinkets” and “cheap items” – the pink “blob” charm “bracelet” or purse/cell phone charm thing is really cute and feminine. I also like the panda “button” pin a lot. But really I’m not seeing much worth the high subscription price here. — The snoopy figure is REALLY well made, A+++. It’s heavy, articulated, bends, poses, and is really cute. — I think he alone is probably worth 10 bucks, which then justifies I guess the other stuff being cheaper — For the price I paid which is half off of what they normally charge. I even wrote in the cancellation request when they asked, I said value not worth price and told them if it was around $18 I’d probably have stayed on board. Which Just FYI, is about the cost of Kawaii Box, and I feel their items are of similar quality. Just not worth $30 when there’s better boxes out there in terms of quality for that price.

If for some reason you feel so compelled to shell out $30 bucks for this box, it can be found at https://www.japancrate.com/dokidoki

But I think there’s better crates out there. (such as Pusheen crate which I’ve reviewed here.)

The next crate I get will be Betoyo, a subscription box just for figurines for $28 a month, – I will sign up probably next month. Stay tuned for more box openings and reviews. Summer Pusheen Box will also be shipping out soon so stay tuned for that as well.

Here are the pictures from my Doki Doki June 2016 Crate. If you’d like to see comments (both my own and others’ replies to them) about each item please check out my instagram account here. thanks. http://instagram.com/xenokitten

Edit: On my instagram on the notes about the snoopy figure, I totally had a brainfart moment. My snoopy is actually one of the most rare. The chances of finding him are 1 out of 60. For some reason I was reading it as there were 60 available lol. (when really there’s thousands of them but yeah, brainfart) While the others are like 1 out of 3 odds, etc. So My snoopy kicks ass and happy with that – I’d be happy with him even if he was “common” cuz he’s cute and well made. 🙂

The 10 VR Games We Can’t Wait to Play

Title: The 10 VR Games We Can’t Wait To Play

Virtual reality headsets are here, and for the right price you can own one now. For most of us, however, the transition to VR remains just around the corner as the leading headsets are only just being rolled out, the price point remains high in most instances, and the lists of available games are still evolving.

However, we have a pretty good idea of what kinds of games we can expect on various VR devices, so in this post we wanted to take a look at 10 titles that look like they can’t miss.

Project Arena

Designed for Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, Project Arena should be one of the more exciting new concepts for early VR. Designed as a TRON-like competition, it will enable you to hurl light discs at your opponents while dodging and shielding yourself from other projectiles. Given that TRON has already inspired successful adaptations like a retro-style mobile game about light cycles on a grid, it goes without saying that there will be a built in fan base for this one.

Star Wars: Battlefront

Star Wars: Battlefront for PS4 was an extraordinarily well-reviewed addition to the franchise, and set the stage perfectly for a transition to VR. This will be one of the more ambitious early VR games given the detail of the settings and the amount of character movement involved, but a first-person foray into the Star Wars universe is going to be hard for most people to say no to.

Tilt Brush

One of the curious things that’s happened in gaming in recent years is that our fascination with HD visuals and highly responsive controls has led to a wave of titles focusing on creativity. Consider that there’s a whole game based on tending a zen garden, and you’ll get the point. Tilt Brush will look to capitalize on this trend by allowing players to paint and design with light strokes in a virtual reality.

Casino VR

The fact that there’s already a top online casino that simulates a real-life casino experience by way of virtual interaction with live dealers bodes pretty well for this style of gaming on actual VR. Simply put, online casinos have already established incredibly realistic atmospheres and gaming options, and Casino VR will represent the first attempt to duplicate that success on VR. The early demos have looked promising.

Lucky’s Tale

Many have wondered what a Super Mario game might look like on VR, and though we’ve heard of nothing like that actually being in the works, Lucky’s Tale isn’t too far off. Available alongside the Oculus Rift, it’s a 3D platformer adventure with a small fox character as its Mario. You don’t actually embody the fox, but you’re right there with it as it tackles the beautiful animated levels that comprise the atmosphere.

100ft. Robot Golf

100ft. Robot Golf is what happens when game developers stop trying to be too clever and simply go with a fun idea. Or at least that’s what it seems like. Basically it’s giant robots playing golf and/or engaging in combat, and it sounds like one of the best ways to take a simple VR action (swinging a golf club) and turn it into something bigger and better.

Minecraft

As mentioned, some of the most exciting early potential on VR is with games that are more about being visually creative than going through a traditional gaming experience. And given the fact that even a pocket edition of Minecraft’s creative version has become wildly popular, releasing a similar experience on VR seems like a no brainer. The thought of being in and among Minecraft creations is intoxicating even to those who aren’t fans of the traditional game.

Eagle Flight

Eagle Flight is pretty much just flying around Paris as an eagle, deciding your direction merely with your glances. Given that rumor has it even jumping off a building in VR gives you a tingling sensation in your spine (some say it’s even so unnatural that they have a hard time pulling it off), soaring freely sounds like a pretty wild adventure.

Rez Infinite

Rez Infinite will resurrect the Rez franchise that started on PS2. Known for otherworldly visuals and action-packed rail shooter gameplay, it could actually be the perfect series to adapt for Sony’s VR. That’s because in a rail shooter the character you control moves along freely, and you only decide where to fire. This eliminates the issue of having to run, jump, etc. and allows players to focus on visuals and action exclusively.

The London Heist

The London Heist could be a big whiff, or it could be one of the titles that helps to establish how a first-person shooter will work on VR. Set in the always intriguing criminal underground of London, it’s a shoot ’em up game. But instead of moving around the whole time, you’re mostly shooting from cover, which means ducking and shooting are the main focuses. The controls are also said to be among the most realistic for action or shooter games on VR. And sure, even if you end up looking dumb playing it, the game sounds like a blast.

Twitch and other social media platforms are helping professional gamers make money just by showcasing the game in real time or the recordings on their platforms. Other than this many other high pay-out games are helping the ordinary person make additional money during their free time, thus ensuring the optimum utilization of their valuable time.

There are a few more titles that could make the list, and many more smaller projects that have been teased or demonstrated for VR headsets. But these 10 are certainly among the most intriguing at this early stage.

Humble Narrative Bundle Features Great Games For Girls with Emphasis on Story and Branching Plots

This week’s humble bundle is a great one. I already had many of the games but I picked it up because Shadowrun Hong Kong looked interesting to me – and 80 Days was a game I was really excited about when it first came out for mobile devices, and I’m looking forward to playing it on the PC. I already gave away a copy of Broken Age on my blog here a few months back and gave it a full review, and I gifted the copy in this humble bundle to one of my online friends. I have a lot more duplicate keys, both from this bundle and others, so I may try hosting another give away in a few weeks. Read Only Memories is an excellent indie visual novel game which I already have, so I will probably try to rehome that game first. Maybe this weekend 🙂 *hint: check back to this blog throughout June for steam key giveaways!*

If you’ve never used Humble Bundle here’s how it works:

How it works:
Humble Bundle is a site where you can save a lot on video games AND support a charity.
Each week a new bundle comes out with handpicked games curated by the humble bundle staff.
The games are available in Tiers.
For any amount even just $1 you get the first “Tier” of games which in this week’s bundle includes: Her Story, Read Only Memories, and Ciebel. Pay more than the “average” which at time of writing this it was $4.15 and you get all of Tier 1 plus Tier 2 which includes 80 days, Broken Age, and Sorcery Parts 1 and 2. Pay $10 to get Tiers 1 and 2 and a bonus game, which this week is Shadowrun Hong Kong Extended Edition
